electrician marketing 101

I must make an admission at the outset of this article – I don’t like tradies. I find them as a section of society to be arrogant, overpaid, and ill informed. Individually, of course, I know some top blokes. Generalisations cannot do justice to each unique person. I meet them, most often, on the roads driving over the speed limit aggressively. Tradies provide an essential service, enabling the working of the modern world via their skills. Marketing the electrician as poster boy for tradie worship would be the last thing in the world I would do willingly.

A Young Adonis Like Sparkie in His Ute

My editor, however, has other ideas and perhaps he hides some nascent desire for the young Adonis like sparkie in his van or ute? The electrician is the brashest of all tradies and one who, wherever possible, avoids getting his hands dirty. Imagine the grungy, trendy inner west electricians of Sydney going about their trade. His hands are never far from arranging his hair do. He connects and modulates current like a popstar warbling over feedback. He or she lays conduit like a member of a boyband in the spring. Marketing the electrician as poster boy for tradie worship is probably not so far-fetched as I imagine.

Tradies Dangerously Speeding To Jobs

They are starting their marketing journeys with Google search. Facebook ads may appear on their horizon despite this digital behemoth being widely on the nose. Tradies don’t have time to watch the news or take it in. They are too busy speeding to their next assignment and feeding the cash cow. Speeding causes more accidents on Australian roads than any other single determinant. Distraction is another major cause and tradies are on the phone talking to clients, as they speed around the place.

The tradie needs to pull his head in. Take a step back and realise he is not god’s gift to humanity. He is just an ordinary bloke doing a job we all appreciate. I always thank the guys that come around and fix my stuff. I am enthusiastic in my expression of thanks, even when the bill seems excessive. Electricians and plumbers probably charge too much but that is the way things are in 2021. The amount they earn you would think they could afford to slow down on the road. I am writing a novel where tradies are frequently blown away by the main character in a blood splattered frenzy. One must safely release the pressure from the pipe, preferably in fantasy than in the real world. Make my day Sparkie!
